Create a proctored exam

Proctored exams require students to obtain authorization before they can start and/or submit their attempt.

You can configure a proctored exam to require proctor authorization, authorization password, or both.

Proctor — A designated Möbius user with specific class or system privileges that can authorize students to start and/or submit proctored exams.

Proctored exams have several unique assignment properties that are not available for other assignment types, including:

Whether proctor sign-in is required to start and/or submit the assignment
Whether authorization password is required to start and/or submit the assignment
Whether Proctored Browser Mode is required during the assignment attempt

These properties are displayed to students on the activity's launch page before they begin their attempt.

To create a proctored exam

Proctored exam properties are configured on the assignment's Properties tab.

On the Properties tab, select the Proctored Exam radio button under Assignment Type. This reveals the proctored exam-specific properties described below.

Require proctor sign-in

Proctor sign-in can be required separately for starting and for submitting the assignment:

Proctor Sign-in to Start
Proctor Sign-in to Submit

Proctor sign-in can be satisfied locally or remotely, depending on how your institution has configured proctor authorization.

Proctor Sign-in to Start is selected by default when Proctored Exam is chosen as the assignment type.

Proctor Sign-in to Submit works the same way, but for submitting the attempt rather than starting it.

Require password authorization

Password authorization requires students to enter a password before they can start and/or submit the assignment.

Select the Password Authorization checkbox.
Define a password. Passwords are case-sensitive.
Choose a password that's easy for a proctor to communicate verbally and for students to enter accurately.
Optionally, select the Resume activity with password checkbox to allow students to resume an in-progress attempt using the password rather than requiring a new authorization.
Combining Resume activity with password and Proctored Browser Mode allows a student to leave and re-enter Proctored Browser Mode an unlimited number of times using only the password, which reduces the security benefit of Proctored Browser Mode.
The authorization password is intended for single use at the start of the attempt. Proctor authorization is still required in the following scenarios, even when a password is set: when the student has not yet started the attempt, and when the assignment also requires Proctor Sign-in to Submit.
Select the Proctor Sign-in to Start and/or Proctor Sign-in to Submit properties if proctor authorization should also be required.
Password authorization does not replace proctor sign-in. If proctor sign-in is required, those properties must still be selected even when a password is also set.
Continue editing the remaining assignment properties as needed.

Require Proctored Browser Mode

Proctored Browser Mode adds an additional layer of security by restricting what students can access during their attempt.

Proctored Browser Mode — A full-screen mode that detects when a student accesses a file, program, or website that's external to the active assignment attempt.
